Student Volunteering

Helping our students develop an ethos and skillset for civic responsibility, at school and beyond.

At Latymer Upper and Latymer Prep, we are immensely proud of the volunteering work our students do for charities, schools and community groups – locally and for international causes. Whilst our Lower Sixth are supported in placements with our community partners as part of their Latymer Diploma, students across all year groups give their time and develop their skills volunteering for a range of charities. You can read more about their participation, and their impact below.

Service in the Community

As part of the Sixth Form curriculum, all Lower Sixth pupils carry out Service in the Community, working actively with local schools, charitable organisations and community projects for a minimum of one term; many continue for much longer.

  • In 2020-21 with lockdowns and restrictions in place, our students took part in an online “Missing Maps” project with the Humanitarian Open Street Map Team (HOT), to help map remote buildings and populations in hard-to-reach humanitarian aid regions. That year, our students gave over 400 hours to map nearly 17,000 buildings in some of the world’s most vulnerable places.
  • In 2021-22, with ‘normal’ placements resumed, our students were again out in the community in partnership with 68 schools, charities and community organisations.

“In the short space of time they have been with us, [Latymer students] have had a positive and substantial impact in the lives of the elderly people who attend the session - many of whom are housebound and would otherwise be isolated and alone without our service

Other volunteering

In all year groups, Latymer Upper students get involved in a wide variety of volunteer projects, giving back to the community and to causes they care deeply about.

We aim to support, inspire and upskill our students in their social contributions where possible. The main purpose of this volunteering is, of course, to benefit our community and global issues; in addition though, we have demonstrated the positive impact this has on the students themselves: their knowledge and experience of the sectors, skill development, and confidence and aspirations to continue engaging in philanthropy and social purpose throughout their lives.
